A devastating fire outbreak rocked Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, on Wednesday, resulting in the tragic loss of two lives.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the fire outbreak occurred around 10 a.m. at the Nine Energies filling station in Asero, Abeokuta.
An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the fire outbreak transpired during a diesel transfer operation from one tanker to another.
PLATFORM TIMES reported that the individuals feared dead from the incident were the driver of the tanker receiving the diesel and his assistant.
At the scene, the burnt tanker stood as a grim reminder of the incident, while Ogun State Fire Service firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the flames.
Also present were police officers and officials from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to maintain order.
A source at the scene recounted, “The fire started around 10 a.m., and we saw thick smoke billowing from the filling station. Due to the intensity of the fire, nobody could approach it.
Fortunately, the firefighters from Ogun State Fire Service arrived later to douse the flames.”
“We later learned that the fire ignited during the diesel transfer operation.
The tanker receiving the diesel burst into flames, while the one delivering the fuel quickly vacated the area to avoid further danger.
Unfortunately, the two occupants of the receiving tanker suffered severe burns and were rushed to the hospital by some courageous individuals.”
The Director of Ogun State Fire Service, Engr. Fatai Adefala, confirmed the incident, noting that those involved in the fire only sustained minor injuries and were promptly taken to Ogun State Hospital, Ijaye, for medical treatment.
Engr. Adefala clarified that the incident involved a single tanker. He explained, “Yes, I was present at the scene.
Only one tanker was involved, and the fire ignited during the diesel transfer process when the pumping machine sparked the flames. Fortunately, the two individuals involved sustained minor injuries and were transported to the state hospital.”
The Police Public Relations Officer for the state command, SP Omolola Odutola, also acknowledged the fire incident but was unable to confirm whether there were any casualties. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
