The World Health Organization (WHO) has sounded a stark warning regarding the elevated risk of severe measles complications faced by unvaccinated children and pregnant individuals. In a Twitter announcement on Wednesday, the global health authority highlighted the alarming consequences associated with this highly contagious disease.
Measles, a viral illness notorious for its contagious nature, can lead to a spectrum of debilitating complications.
These include blindness, infection-causing brain swelling potentially resulting in brain damage, ear infections, and severe respiratory issues, such as pneumonia.
The revelation underscores the critical importance of measles immunization for vulnerable populations.
Furthermore, WHO underscored the ease with which measles can be transmitted, cautioning that an infected person can spread the virus from four days before the onset of the characteristic rash to four days after its emergence. This ease of transmission has made measles a persistent global threat.
The organization emphasized, “Measles is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus.
It spreads easily when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes, through close personal contact, or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions.”
Measles remains one of the deadliest contagious diseases worldwide, capable of causing severe complications and even fatalities. Despite the severity of the disease, the WHO shared a glimmer of hope, pointing out that measles vaccination has proven to be a life-saving intervention.
It’s estimated that between 2000 and 2021, measles vaccination averted an astonishing 56 million deaths globally, a testament to the effectiveness of immunization programs.
As the WHO continues to advocate for vaccination against measles, their latest warning serves as a crucial reminder of the substantial health risks faced by unvaccinated children and expectant mothers, urging them to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities.
