The Katsina State Government has paid more than N640.6 million in scholarship allowances to about 47,935 fresh and continuing indigenous students of the state for the 2020/2021 and the 2021/2022 academic session.

Governor Dikko Radda, announced this on Monday at a disbursement event, where he also reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of the students and ensuring timely payment of their scholarships in tertiary institutions.

He said that his government would also sponsor some of the best students to study abroad, so that they could acquire the necessary exposure and skills to provide quality leadership for the state in the future.

He added that his administration had laid the foundation for the establishment of three special model schools, which would give opportunities to bright students in the rural areas, who could not afford private schools.

“These schools are meant to provide equal opportunities to the less privileged, so that they can compete with the children of the elites or even surpass them,” he said.

The Executive Secretary of the state’s Scholarship Board, Dr Aminu Salisu-Tsauri, said that the board planned to propose an upward review of scholarship allowances to reflect the current economic realities.

He also said that the board intended to introduce attendance registers, skills based scholarship, and a conversion of the board to a trust fund, in line with the Federal Government’s agenda.

He further said that the board would seek for national and bursary awards scholarship from the Federal Government for 91 students of Katsina State.

“These among other things are part of the government’s renewed hope agenda,” he said.
