In anticipation of the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States on November 11, 2023, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken significant steps to ensure the safety and security of the electoral process.
This strategic move includes the distribution of 220 operational vehicles and an array of security logistics.
The announcement was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement posted on the official Nigerian Police Force’s Twitter handle on Sunday, November 5.
The statement highlighted the Inspector-General’s commitment to facilitating smooth election processes and intensifying security arrangements.
The distributed resources encompass various security equipment, such as water cannons, armored personnel carriers, helmets, bullet-proof vests, and tear gas canisters.
These provisions are aimed at fortifying security measures and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process in the three affected states.
Notably, the Inspector-General of Police had already taken proactive steps to prepare for the elections.
He organized training sessions for the police officers who will play pivotal roles in managing security during the electoral process.
Furthermore, he sought the approval of the Federal Government for the payment of allowances and additional support to boost the morale of these officers during their election-related duties.
In light of these preparations, the Inspector-General of Police has called upon all stakeholders in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States to prioritize peace, uphold the rule of law, and act lawfully throughout the entire election process.
He emphasized that the police and other security agencies have been placed on high alert, ready to respond swiftly to any potential disruptions that may arise during the elections.
With these comprehensive measures in place, the Inspector-General of Police is determined to ensure the successful and secure conduct of the off-cycle governorship elections, reinforcing the democratic process and safeguarding the well-being of all citizens involved.
