In a determined effort to combat polio virus, reduce child morbidity, and enhance the overall well-being of children and women, the Ogun State Government has launched a comprehensive initiative that aims to provide essential vaccines and health services.

A statement released by the Information officer of the Primary Health Centre Development Board, the campaign was officially inaugurated during the flag-off ceremony of the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) and Optimized Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Week at the Primary Health Center in Kugba, Abeokuta.

Dr. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health, emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding children against the Wild Polio Virus and other deadly childhood diseases.

The vaccination and immunization program, which began on Friday, November 10, will run until Tuesday, November 14, 2023, targeting children aged 0-5 years.

One of the key aspects of this initiative is providing free and safe vaccines to children. The immunization efforts will extend to households, ensuring that every eligible child receives the necessary protection.

Additionally, pregnant women and children will have access to a range of health services, including Vitamin A and Multiple Micronutrients supplements, deworming tablets, and routine immunizations at Primary Health facilities throughout the state.

Commissioner Tomi Coker urged parents and guardians to support the government’s efforts by ensuring their children receive the necessary immunizations.

She also encouraged pregnant women to take advantage of the healthcare services provided by the government to reduce morbidity and mortality rates.

Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, the Executive Secretary of the Primary Health Care Development Board, commended the state’s remarkable achievement of not recording a polio outbreak in the past 14 years.

He appealed to mothers to participate in the immunization campaign, emphasizing that immunization is designed to safeguard, not harm, their children.

Hon. Omolaja Majekodunmi, Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, represented by Hon. Gafar Abd’Kareem, the Supervisor for Health, expressed gratitude to the state government for its commitment to ensuring mothers and children have access to quality healthcare services, pledging to support and complement these efforts.

In addition to local representatives, various organizations, including WHO, UNICEF, NPHCDA, Rotary Club district 9110, SOLINA Health, SYDANI Group, and AFENET, have lauded the Ogun State Government’s unwavering support in polio eradication.

They pledged their continued support to ensure that mothers and children in the state have access to affordable and high-quality healthcare services.

This campaign represents a significant step in the ongoing battle against polio and child morbidity in Ogun State, with the government and its partners working together to create a healthier and safer future for children and women.
