In a stark revelation, Vice President Kashim Shettima has labeled the recent floods and droughts in Nigeria as an ‘existential threat,’ emphasizing the harsh realities of climate change.
Last month’s data from the National Emergency Management Agency reported 45 fatalities and 171,545 displacements due to widespread flooding, prompting Shettima to stress the urgent need for action.
Receiving a detailed report from the Presidential Committee on Flood Mitigation, Adaptation, Preparedness, and Response, Shettima dispelled any doubts about the impact of climate change in Nigeria.
Quoting him directly, he declared, “Climate change is real, and the existential threat it poses is glaring at us every day.”
The Vice President linked the global climate crisis to the devastating events witnessed in Africa, highlighting the disproportionate impact on the continent.
Shettima praised the committee’s dedication in drafting the report, which relied on scientific input and forecasts from agencies like the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the National Space Research and Development Agency, and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
The report identifies vulnerable communities prone to flooding and outlines a roadmap with recommendations to address the pressing issue.
Expressing gratitude for the committee’s swift response to his directive, Shettima emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to improving the lives of vulnerable Nigerians.
The Vice President underscored the report’s alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, portraying it as a tangible testament to the government’s dedication to tackling climate-related challenges.
