In a spirited move to celebrate Nigeria’s rich cultural tapestry, Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a directive mandating all public servants in Osun State to wear Adire to work every Wednesday.

The circular, released by the Osun State Head of Service, Ayanleye Aina, on November 16, 2023, extends the cultural promotion to various sectors, including ministries, departments, agencies, tertiary institutions, local governments, and development councils.

Designating every Wednesday as “Adire Osun Day,” the directive underscores the commitment of the state, with accounting officers and agency heads expected to comply.

This cultural initiative also extends to political appointees, including special advisers, following unanimous approval and adoption in the State Executive Council.

Governor Adeleke, emphasizing Adire’s roots in Osun State, aims to reaffirm the region’s traditional connection to the indigenous fabric.

This decision, aimed at revitalizing the Adire industry, stems from Adeleke’s vision to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Osun as the cradle of the Yoruba nation.

The circular quoted Governor Adeleke’s presentation during the State Executive Council meeting, where the need to embrace the local fabric was discussed and unanimously approved.

Adeleke also highlighted his collaboration with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, outlining plans to jointly host an annual Adire Day celebration, fostering cultural exchanges between the two states.

In an effort to support local industries, Adeleke’s administration announced plans to establish SME industrial clusters, with a specific focus on the Adire industry and other craft sub-sectors.

The governor expressed determination to counter the threat posed by foreign mass producers, pledging to breathe new life into the Adire industry through this cultural resurgence.

Governor Adeleke acknowledged a similar initiative by his predecessor, Gboyega Oyetola, who, on July 11, 2021, encouraged civil servants to wear Adire every Thursday, contributing to the fabric industry’s growth. Adeleke’s broader vision aims not only to boost the industry but to cultivate a deep appreciation for Osun’s cultural legacy.
