The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has brought charges against Mr. Suleiman Adavize, a civil servant from the Border Communities Development Agency (BCDA), accusing him of falsely signing off on an incomplete contract.
Adavize faced a three-count charge related to false statements before Hon Justice Peter Kekemeke at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
One count alleged that he made a false statement in a progress report, claiming a 100% completion of the construction of an ICT Centre in Gumel Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
The charges assert that Adavize, being an architect at the BCDA, did not visit the ICT Centre and knowingly misrepresented its completion status, violating Section 70 (1)(b) of the Public Enterprise Regulatory.
During the arraignment, Adavize pleaded not guilty, and his Counsel, AG Osayande, requested bail, which was unopposed by ICPC’s counsel, Eno Ighodaro-Yahaya.
Justice Kekemeke granted bail at N2,000,000.00 with one surety, specifying the surety must be a pastor, the chairman of the estate, or a senior officer at Adavize’s workplace.
ICPC’s spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, stated that the charges stemmed from a petition received in July 2022, highlighting discrepancies in an ICT centre project in Gumel, Jigawa State.
The agency’s Constituency and Executive Tracking Initiative previously exposed instances where projects certified as completed were not so upon further investigation.
The case is scheduled for hearing on February 22nd, 2024.
