In a gesture aimed at facilitating the reintegration of individuals who had committed minor offenses, the Federal Government of Nigeria granted cash gifts to 15 inmates from the Malumfashi Satellite Custodial Centre in Katsina.
The release event, which took place on Saturday, saw each inmate receiving N10,000 to ease their transportation to their respective destinations.
The announcement of this benevolent initiative was made by the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Mr. Haliru Nababa, who was represented by the Controller of Corrections for Katsina Command, Mr. Abdulmumin-Haruna.
The Controller General praised the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for championing this laudable cause to support individuals who had committed minor offenses.
Mr. Nababa emphasized that the selected inmates were released as a result of their involvement in minor offenses, aligning with the government’s commitment to rehabilitation and second chances for those who have erred.
The financial assistance provided is intended to alleviate the transportation burden for the newly released individuals, enabling them to transition smoothly to their destinations.
“I commend the minister for this laudable initiative aimed at putting smiles on the faces of freed inmates,” stated Mr. Nababa, highlighting the government’s acknowledgment of the challenges faced by those reintegrating into society after serving their sentences.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to criminal justice reform and social rehabilitation, recognizing that even individuals who have made mistakes deserve support and opportunities for a fresh start.
