At least 163 lives were tragically cut short, and the tranquility of Lagos was disrupted as 189 cases of robbery unfolded in the past year, according to recent police records.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, DCP Waheed Ayilara, revealed these alarming statistics during the 17th Town Hall Meeting on security organized by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF).
In a detailed report, Ayilara highlighted that within the specified timeframe, 189 residential robberies were reported, with security operatives successfully thwarting 172 of them and apprehending 257 robbery suspects.
The crime situation in Lagos further revealed the recovery of 103 firearms, 324 assorted ammunition, and 279 dangerous weapons.
The somber statistics continued as Ayilara disclosed 158 cases of murder, resulting in the unfortunate demise of 163 victims.
Additionally, 18 kidnapping suspects were apprehended in connection with eight incidents, highlighting the complex security challenges faced by the city.
Beyond the criminal landscape, the Acting Commissioner of Police raised concerns about the rising cases of domestic violence and abuse, revealing that 256 gender-related violence cases were recorded, leading to the arrest of 333 suspects.
During the Town Hall Meeting held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended the collaborative efforts of the police and sister agencies in combating crimes.
Despite acknowledging the state’s stabilized security landscape compared to other regions, he emphasized the challenges that lie ahead.
Governor Sanwo-Olu outlined ongoing efforts by the LSSTF to enhance security, citing consistent funding, provision of operational vehicles, and equipment for security agencies.
He disclosed plans to boost the fleet of patrol vehicles for security agencies by 300 units in 2024, in collaboration with local government authorities.
Despite economic challenges affecting donations, LSSTF Executive Secretary, Dr. AbdurRazaq Balogun, expressed gratitude for the significant contributions received, enabling the Fund to bridge equipment shortfalls within federally controlled security agencies operating in Lagos.
As the city grapples with these unsettling crime statistics, the commitment of both governmental and private entities remains crucial in ensuring the safety and security of Lagosians.
