The Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission (YIEC) has officially proposed a budget of N500 million for the forthcoming local government council election.
The election, initially slated for November 25, has been rescheduled to take place on May 25, 2024, according to the announcement made by Dr Mamman Muhammad, the executive chairman of the commission.
Dr Mamman Muhammad disclosed this information during a stakeholders meeting held in Damaturu, the state capital.
He emphasized that the commission is dedicated to ensuring a credible, free, fair, and peaceful election process at the grassroots level.
To facilitate this, political parties will be issued election guidelines to guide them in fielding suitable candidates.
The eligibility criteria for candidates were outlined, with Dr Mamman stating that aspiring candidates must possess a minimum of a secondary school certificate and be residents of the communities they intend to represent.
Additionally, he announced the financial requirements for contestants, specifying that those running for chairmanship would pay a fee of N300,000, while vice-chairmanship and councillorship aspirants would pay N250,000 and N200,000, respectively.
Despite the initial scheduling, major political parties in the state, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), and other parties, have unanimously agreed to the postponement of the local government election to May 2024.
Bala Muhammad, the state chairman of the Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC), expressed the council’s endorsement of the decision taken by YIEC, emphasizing their collective commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process next year.
The rescheduling of the election aims to provide ample time for political parties and candidates to adequately prepare and participate in the democratic process, fostering an environment conducive to transparent and inclusive governance at the grassroots level.
The stakeholders’ meeting marks a collaborative effort to uphold the principles of democracy in Yobe State.
