In a bid to address the growing concern of cultism in the region, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has called on the State Directors of Security (SDS) to take a more proactive approach in identifying the root causes of this social menace.
During the fourth Quarter of SDS Conference, South West Zone in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun expressed his dismay over the increasing prevalence of cultism, highlighting the alarming involvement of diverse groups, including primary school children, vulcanizers, welders, artisans, and even the educated population.
“Why are they killing each other? Is there something they are earning, some kind of reward? What is the incentive? I think these are posers and questions for you to look into,” the Governor remarked, emphasizing the need to delve deeper into understanding the motivations behind such activities.
Governor Abiodun urged the security officials not to focus solely on addressing the symptoms but to actively investigate and uncover the root causes of cultism.
He suggested that by doing so, they could prevent the issue at its source and subsequently witness a reduction in incidents.
The Governor also highlighted the significance of the Conference as a platform for State Directors of Security to exchange ideas and strengthen the security architecture of the South-Western states.
He emphasized the importance of community policing, citing the establishment of ‘Amotekun’ as a response to the identified gap in community policing that required attention.
“We felt there was a gap in community policing, and we needed to have some sort of arrangement that will allow us to further deepen security in the South-West region, based on our peculiarities,” Governor Abiodun stated.
In addition, the Governor stressed the need for inter-state cooperation, shared intelligence, and law enforcement to enhance security across borders.
He highlighted ongoing infrastructure initiatives, including the installation of fiber optic cables and collaboration with Lagos to illuminate the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and deploy close-circuit cameras for enhanced security.
The tragic incident involving the murder of the Director of Finance served as a wake-up call for the state, prompting the government to take proactive measures to address security challenges.
In response to Governor Abiodun’s call, the State Director of Security, Folashade Adekaiyaoja, assured the public of the SDS’s renewed commitment to finding lasting solutions to insecurity.
The Chairman of the Conference and Ekiti State Director of Security pledged to thoroughly address the topic and propose effective solutions in collaboration with other states in the region.
