In a tragic incident in Anambra State, two policemen fell victim to assailants clad in military camouflage.
The officers were fatally shot near Uga roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area during a kidnap mission by the suspects on Thursday night.
The Police Command, in a statement released on Friday, revealed that the policemen, part of a motorcade team, encountered the gunmen while attempting to clear a traffic gridlock.
The assailants opened fire, killing two officers on the spot before making a swift escape.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, confirmed that the attackers wore military fatigues. Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye promptly ordered an intensive manhunt for the assailants.
Responding to the incident, a police-led Mobile Forward Operating Base, actively patrolling the area during the Christmas period, swiftly reacted.
They successfully recovered a Lexus SUV used by the gang and an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the deceased officers.
Additionally, an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle was safely defused.
Commissioner Aderemi Adeoye declared the weekend and Christmas holidays as special working days for all officers, commending their unwavering dedication in securing the people of Anambra State.
The statement emphasized the deployment of technology to track down the criminals responsible for the attack on police personnel.
Despite the tragic loss, the CP urged the command’s operatives not to be demoralized, encouraging them to draw inspiration from the bravery exhibited by the late officers in confronting the criminal gang.
The CP extended condolences to the families of the deceased officers and vowed that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
