Food Prices Surge In November, NBS Reports

In a recent release on Friday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) revealed a significant spike in the average prices of various food items during November 2023.

According to the report, the average price of 1kg of brown beans surged by 6.18% from N790.01 in October 2023. On a year-on-year basis, this staple witnessed a remarkable 44.99% increase, soaring from N578.55 in November 2022 to N838.85 in November 2023.

Similarly, the average price of 1kg onion bulb rose by 60.62% year-on-year, jumping from N425.71 in November 2022 to N683.78 in November 2023. 

Additionally, the price of 1kg of tomatoes increased by 66.69% year-on-year and by 12.24% from N675.91 in October 2023 to N758.65 in November 2023.

The report highlighted Lagos as the state with the highest average price of rice during the month under review. 

“The state profile analysis in November 2023 reveals that the highest average price of 1kg of local rice sold was recorded in Lagos state with N1,122.42 while the lowest was recorded in Kebbi state with N688.00,” stated the NBS in its Selected Food Prices Watch report for November released in Abuja on Friday.

Moreover, the highest average price of 1kg of boneless beef was recorded in Anambra State at N3,850.47, while the lowest was reported in Yobe State at N2,533.33.

Imo State took the lead in the average price of 1kg of brown beans at N1,109.75, with Jigawa recording the lowest price at N575.00. Anambra State also topped the list for the highest average price of 1kg onion bulb sold loose at N872.23, whereas Gombe reported the lowest at N506.41.

In the case of tomatoes, Delta State recorded the highest average price at N1,505.16, contrasting with Kano’s lowest average price of N396.04.

The analysis by zone revealed that the South-West had the highest average price of 1kg local rice at N956.28, followed by the South-South with N932.47. The North-East recorded the lowest average price at N776.12.

Similarly, the South-East and South-West led in the average price of 1kg boneless beef at N3,643.65 and N3,290.11, respectively, while the North-East reported the lowest at N2,632.22.

For 1kg of brown beans (sold loose), the South-East recorded the highest average price at N1,034.08, followed by the South-West at N977.98, while the North-West reported the lowest at N663.96.

The South-East and South-South had the highest average price of 1kg onion bulb at N817.11 and N775.34, respectively, while the North-East reported the lowest at N529.95.

In terms of tomatoes, the South-South topped the chart with the highest average price at N1,307.66, followed by the South-West at N1,047.18. The North-West reported the lowest average price at N434.80.
