The National Union of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to the Federal Government to review the suspension imposed on the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates obtained from neighboring Benin Republic and Togo.
This suspension, enacted on Tuesday, was in response to revelations about the rapid acquisition of a degree from a Benin Republic university within two months.
NANS, represented by its Senate President, Akinteye Afeez, acknowledged the government’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of academic qualifications.
However, the student body emphasized the necessity of considering the impact on legitimate students who have diligently pursued their education in these francophone West African countries.
Highlighting that numerous students have completed various years of study and some have successfully graduated, NANS expressed concern about the uncertainty these students now face.
Many are awaiting the approval of their evaluation lists to participate in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) programme, and potential delays could impact their academic and professional pursuits.
In a statement, NANS urged a reassessment of the blanket suspension, emphasising the importance of distinguishing between those involved in fraudulent activities and the majority of students who pursued their education genuinely.
The body stressed that Benin Republic and Togo host a significant number of Nigerian students seeking quality education, and a blanket suspension could strain diplomatic and educational relations, affecting opportunities for Nigerian students in these neighboring countries.
NANS suggested that the Federal Government should reverse the suspension while maintaining a rigorous and transparent evaluation process.
According to the student body, this approach would alleviate the stress and uncertainties currently faced by legitimate students caught in the aftermath of the suspension.
