In the aftermath of the devastating Christmas Eve attacks on three communities in Plateau State, a survivor has bravely shared the harrowing details of losing three family members to the ruthless assailants.
The victim, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the horrifying experience to a delegation from the Middle Belt Patriots during their visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin-Ladi on Wednesday.
A resident of the Mangu community, the survivor revealed that the attackers mercilessly killed his mother and two brothers during the onslaught.
Shockingly, one brother was mutilated and left headless, adding an extra layer of horror to the tragic event.
“On the 24th of December, around 7.30 pm or 7.45 pm, we started hearing gunshots nonstop.
The attackers sent everyone out. My mother, while trying to escape, was hit by a bullet in the chest.
Then, my junior brother, they macheted him, and another of my brothers, after he was killed, they mutilated him. We have to bury him without the head (sic),” the survivor narrated.
In response to reports suggesting the involvement of fellow Mangu residents, the survivor clarified that the attackers, arriving in over 30 motorcycles, thronged their village, indiscriminately killing and burning down houses.
Meanwhile, Pwayong, a member of the Middle Belt Patriots delegation, shed light on the dire living conditions in some IDP camps by sharing images of the deplorable circumstances.
One stark photo depicted IDPs sleeping on the floor of makeshift camps set up in classrooms.
Pwayong highlighted the dependence of the displaced on donations for sustenance, revealing that they often cooked and ate once a day, with some days passing without any food at all.
“Most of the parents had gone out to look for food when our team arrived, so we met mostly children,” Pwayong posted.
The December attacks resulted in the tragic loss of over 150 lives, with more than 10,000 people displaced. North Central governors have drawn parallels to the Rwanda genocide, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Despite assurances from the Federal Government to bring the perpetrators to justice, Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang admitted the challenges in unraveling the well-coordinated attacks executed with heavy weaponry.
The state continues to grapple with the aftermath, seeking justice for the victims and answers to the tragic events that unfolded during that fateful Christmas Eve.
