Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, disclosed that his administration has successfully empowered approximately 11,885 startup businesses over the past four years.
The beneficiaries primarily include indigent individuals, vulnerable populations, and graduates of Skills Acquisition Centers within the state.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised that this initiative aimed to tackle poverty, boost wealth creation, and mitigate the challenges faced by Nigerians due to subsidy removal.
The revelation was made during the 2024 Lagos State Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
Commending the ministry for driving the administration’s economic development and poverty eradication strategy, the Governor urged the youth to actively participate in various empowerment schemes for the betterment of Lagosians.
Highlighting the importance of Micro-Enterprises in economic development, poverty reduction, and job creation, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated, “This initiative is a tangible demonstration of our commitment to addressing the plight of the less privileged.”
During the MESI event, beneficiaries received support in the form of various equipment, including milling machines, sewing machines, professional hair dryers, barbing clippers, generators, popcorn machines, shawarma grills, toasting machines, snail pens, industrial cookers, tile laying machines, and garri processing equipment.
Mrs. Cecilia Dada, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, congratulated the recipients and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on idleness.
She emphasized that the Year 2024 Lagos State Micro-Enterprise Support Initiative marked a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to alleviate poverty and empower vulnerable members of society.
Dada further stated, “Governor Sanwo-Olu’s unwavering commitment to implementing policies through the T.H.E.M.E.S plus agenda underscores our dedication to economic growth and development for a progressively Greater Lagos.”
She concluded by highlighting the Ministry’s ongoing programs for women and the indigent in the state.
