The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) announced on Saturday that it is launching an investigation into reports suggesting the conversion of polyethylene (rubber) into edible oil.

In a statement released by Mr. Tayo Akintola, the Resident Media Consultant for NAFDAC, the regulatory body emphasized its commitment to a science-based approach in addressing the viral social media report.

The statement revealed that the investigation was prompted by a widely circulated post depicting the alleged frying of plantain chips.

The claim suggests that before grating the plantain into hot oil, an individual melted approximately five pieces of white polyethylene, commonly known as ‘Olonka rubber,’ into the oil.

“NAFDAC is a responsible and responsive regulatory authority guided by science,” the statement affirmed. It further outlined the Agency’s plan to conduct necessary laboratory investigations into the reported conversion process.

Meanwhile, NAFDAC has  issued a set of guidelines for consumers of NAFDAC-regulated food products:

    Purchase from reputable sources.
Verify the NAFDAC Registration Number on the product label/package as a sign of approval.

Exercise caution if the packaging appears suspect or compromised.
Be wary of objectionable smells or colors in the product.

Exercise caution if the product’s price is significantly lower than similar products.

The statement reassured the public of NAFDAC’s proactive stance, asserting the Agency’s dedication to safeguarding public health. It concluded by confirming that a thorough investigation into the alleged claim is underway.
