In a bold display of integrity, a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) resisted a tempting one million naira bribe from a suspected bandit apprehended in a Tafa Community hotel, just 13 kilometers from Bwari, the notorious epicenter of bandit operations in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The arrest, executed on January 19, 2024, unfolded after the police received credible intelligence pinpointing the presence of the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Bello Muhammad from Zamfara State, at the Easyway hotel in Tafa town.
Acting swiftly, operatives led by the vigilant DPO raided the hotel, capturing the alleged kidnapper and seizing a substantial sum of N2,350,000 – believed to be proceeds from ransom.
According to ASP Mansir Hassan, the Police Command Public Relations Officer, the investigation exposed the suspect’s admission to being part of a kidnapping gang operating in the Kagarko forest of Kaduna.
Incriminating evidence on his mobile phone, including images of him brandishing an AK47 rifle in a forest, supported his confession.
In a desperate attempt to halt the ongoing investigation, Bello Muhammad reportedly offered a one million naira bribe to the DPO, who promptly rejected the illicit gesture.
The suspect’s cooperation with the police continues, as they gather vital information to further their inquiries.
Commending the Tafa Division’s operatives for their commendable work, Commissioner of Police for Kaduna State, CP A.D Ali, urged sustained efforts to curb crime in the region.
He also called on hoteliers and leisure service operators to scrutinize customer identities diligently, preventing criminals from finding refuge in their establishments.
The Commissioner emphasized the need to intensify efforts until crimes and criminal activities are significantly reduced.
