In a disheartening turn of events, the 2024 Batch A, Stream 1 National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members, who embarked on their service journey this February, are grappling with the exorbitant food prices at the Mammy markets located within the NYSC camps.
The Mammy markets, established to cater to those unwilling to endure long queues for camp-provided meals, have become a source of distress for Corp members.
Jefferson, a Corp member stationed at the Bauchi NYSC Camp, took to TikTok to shed light on the predicament, revealing that the steep prices in Mammy markets have compelled the majority of Corp members to opt for the camp-provided food.
Lamenting the financial strain, Jefferson explained, “Everyone is opting for camp food due to the unaffordable prices in Mammy markets.
Even those who arrived with substantial funds have depleted their resources within two days.
“Now, there’s a scarcity of food for all Corp members, and we find ourselves competing for a spot in the queue to receive meager portions.”
The situation is equally dire in the southern part of the country, where another Corp member disclosed that the camp coordinator had cautioned them against relying solely on camp food, emphasizing its inadequacy.
She recounted, “Our camp coordinator went so far as to suggest considering an early camp exit, citing that the camp cannot adequately feed everyone.”
The NYSC mobilized these Corp members for service on February 13, 2024, under Batch A Stream 1, with the expectation that they would spend three weeks in their respective states of deployment.
However, the prevailing challenge of soaring food prices in the Mammy markets has cast a shadow over the overall experience for these dedicated young individuals.
