Tragedy struck as an unidentified resident of Lagis state lost his life in a stampede while attempting to purchase rice at the Nigerian Customs office in Lagos.
Dr. Adunola, @yemoka, confirmed the unfortunate incident, stating that the man fell and was trampled on while on the rice queue with his wife.
Dr. Adunola, who disclosed the incident on social media, expressed sorrow, revealing that the deceased left behind very young children.
Another eyewitness, a resident of Lagos, recounted a chaotic scene at the Customs office in Yaba, where an overwhelming crowd of approximately 10,000 people struggled to buy rice.
The resident lamented the preferential treatment given to uniformed officers from various forces, highlighting the violence in the queue that resulted in a section of the fence being pulled down. Shockingly, even a woman in a wheelchair fell victim to the brutality.
Reports earlier in the week indicated that the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) would distribute confiscated food products nationwide.
The spokesperson for the NCS, CSC Abdullahi Maiwada, explained that the decision aimed to address the current hardships faced by Nigerians, tackling issues of food security and soaring prices of essential items.
The NCS emphasized that the distribution would occur following the certification of food items to ensure their suitability for human consumption.
