President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the comprehensive execution of the Oronsaye Report, leading to the merging, subsuming, scrapping, and relocation of numerous government agencies.

The announcement came after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, where Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed the significant decision.

Idris explained, “In a very bold move today, this administration, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, consistent again with his courage to take very far-reaching decisions in the interest of Nigeria, has taken a decision to implement the so-called Oronsaye Report.”

Under the directive, a committee has been formed by the President to oversee the mergers, scrapping, and relocations within a timeframe of 12 weeks, according to Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Mrs. Hadiza Bala-Usman.

The Oronsaye report, submitted in 2012, highlighted 541 Federal Government parastatals, commissions, and agencies, both statutory and non-statutory.

The report recommended significant reforms, suggesting a reduction of 263 statutory agencies to 161, scrapping 38 agencies, merging 52, and reverting 14 to departments in various ministries.

One notable proposal was the repeal of the law establishing the National Salaries and Wages Commission, with its functions to be assumed by the Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Responsibility Commission.

The report also advised merging the nation’s top three anti-corruption agencies—Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, and the Code of Conduct Bureau.

Preliminary analysis indicates potential savings of over N241 billion for the Nigerian Government if the recommendations of the Oronsaye Report are diligently implemented.

This move reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to making impactful decisions for the benefit of the nation.
