In a significant operation, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Ekiti State has apprehended two women for their involvement in the alleged sale of a baby for a staggering N2 million.
The arrest took place at Ilupeju Ekiti, within the Oye local government area of the state.
Headed by Mr. Emuze John from the NAPTIP headquarters, a dedicated team carried out the operation alongside officers of the agency in Ekiti State, as revealed by Oladimeji Samson, Head of the NAPTIP Ekiti liaison office.
The primary suspect, Ifeoma Ejide, stands accused of selling a female baby to Mrs. Funmilayo Ibitoye for the sum of N2 million.
Shedding light on the operation, Oladimeji disclosed, “My colleagues came from Abuja for a case of a woman that had a baby factory at Owo, Ondo State.
The woman was arrested in Owo and led them to the place where she sold the baby.”
The buyer, Mrs. Ibitoye, whose husband resides in the United States, reportedly purchased the baby but had only paid a partial amount of the agreed sum.
Shockingly, Ejide confessed to operating a baby factory, revealing a dark and prevalent trend in the region.
Oladimeji emphasized the widespread nature of such cases, stating, “This issue is rampant and common here. Most of these people (baby buyers) use herbs and are told not to visit any hospital so that they can’t be tracked.
We asked her how long she had been breastfeeding the child, and she said there was no milk the first time she tried to breastfeed the baby. This case is connected to several other cases.”
The arrests highlight the ongoing battle against human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable lives, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and action by law enforcement agencies.
