The Western Marine Command (WMC) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) took a significant step in the fight against drug trafficking on Monday.
They handed over 120 sacks of Cannabis Sativa, commonly known as Marijuana, valued at N704.5 million, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Comptroller Salefu Odaudu, the Customs Area Controller for WMC, disclosed that the 120 sacks contained a total of 10,551 loaves of cannabis sativa, with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N704.5 million.
These seizures resulted from three separate operations conducted at Jegemo Island opposite Iworo Ajido Waterfront and Asipa Beach along Seme borders on November 29, 2023, December 2, 2023, and January 19, 2024.
Highlighting the efforts of his officers, Comptroller Salefu emphasized the hard work, dedication, and bravery displayed in countering the illicit drug trade.
While suspects remain at large, he expressed confidence in collaborating with the NDLEA to apprehend those involved.
“The Western Marine Command of Nigeria Customs Service remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguard the nation’s economic interests by collaborating with sister agencies whenever necessary,” Salefu stated.
He urged Nigerians to refrain from engaging in illicit and illegal cross-border trade practices, emphasizing the detrimental impact on the country’s economic and health welfare.
Speaking on behalf of the NDLEA, Commander of Narcotics Paul Ahon commended the Western Marine Customs for their collaboration and pledged to strengthen the partnership to combat drug smuggling.
Ahon asserted that the war against drugs is a collective responsibility, emphasizing the need for synergy in ensuring the waterways remain free from illicit trade.
The handover ceremony marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking, showcasing the effective collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in safeguarding the nation’s well-being and economic interests.
