In a dramatic tur of events during Wednesday’s plenary session, the Edo State House of Assembly has begun the impeachment process against the embattled Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.
The revelation was made by Charity Aiguobarueghian, the Majority Leader and representative of Ovia North East 1, who disclosed that a petition, dated March 5, 2024, endorsed by 21 out of 24 lawmakers, instigated this course of action.
Aiguobarueghian emphasized that the signed petition fulfills the constitutional requirement of a two-thirds majority.
The grounds for the impeachment include allegations of perjury and the divulgence of confidential Edo State government information.
Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, directed the House Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice to Deputy Governor Shaibu.
Furthermore, Agbebaku confirmed that Shaibu has been granted seven days to respond to the impeachment notice.
The rift between Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki has been escalating over recent months.
In a recent appearance on TV programmes, Shaibu has attributed the strained relationship to his gubernatorial ambitions, stating that Obaseki is displeased with his support for a different candidate.
Despite Shaibu’s efforts to mend the relationship, he claimed that Obaseki remains unresponsive, even in public settings.
Shaibu, winner of a parallel primary, maintains his authenticity as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the September 21 governorship election, opposing Asue Ighodalo, who was elected as the official PDP candidate.
Shaibu has expressed concern that the party risks losing the state if it supports Ighodalo over him.
The unfolding political drama in Edo State continues to capture attention as the deputy governor faces the prospect of impeachment amid a turbulent political landscape.
