Oba Of Benin Advocates African Brotherhood For ECOWAS Conflict Resolution

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has called  for the revival of African brotherhood between Nigerian leaders  and  their  counterparts in neighbouring countries such as Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.

The monarch made this call during a courtesy visit by the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr. Agun Gbenga Joseph, at his Palace in Benin City.

He expressed concern that these connections may be complicating the conflict resolution efforts by  the Economic Community of West African States  particularly under the leadership of Chairman President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria.

The former Nigerian Ambassador to Italy pointed out the porous nature of the borders between Nigeria and its neighbours, emphasising the intertwined lives of citizens on both sides.

He reflected on the challenges posed by the close proximity of Niger and Nigeria, where individuals freely cross borders for work and residence.

Oba Ewuare II highlighted his personal concerns during a recent coup d’état in Niger and commended the lifting of sanctions, urging collective efforts to bridge differences and promote collaboration.

In response, NSCDC Commandant Mr. Agun Gbenga Joseph, seeking the monarch’s prayers, outlined the agency’s initiatives to combat crime in Edo State.

The Commandant, accompanied by senior officers, emphasised the significance of Act 3 of 2003, which established the NSCDC with security responsibilities in Nigeria.
