Traders from the phone and digital market at TARMAC in Ibara, Abeokuta, are urgently appealing to the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to prevent the impending demolition of their market.
Protesters, organized under the Mobile Phone Dealers and Technicians Association (MOPDATEC), took to the streets on Friday, brandishing placards with messages like “Save us Governor Dapo Abiodun” and “We are over 3,000 youths.”
The market, previously acquired by the Ogun State Government over a decade ago, now faces threats from alleged land grabbers claiming ownership.
Speaking on behalf of MOPDATEC, Public Relations Officer Mr. Nnaekezie Ifeanyichukwu highlighted the risk of rendering over 3,000 traders unemployed if the demolition proceeds.
He called on the state government to intervene, cautioning the land grabbers and preserving the traders’ livelihoods.
Former association chairman, Comrade Adebayo Joseph (Pascal), emphasized the prolonged issue since the tenure of the former governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
He urged Abiodun to step in, noting the association’s historical commitment to the market and the lack of responsiveness from the local government.
General Secretary Ogunyemi Afolabi expressed concerns over the potential increase in unemployment if the demolition proceeds.
The traders appealed to Hon. Igbalaye Wasiu Ayodele (IWA), the representative of Abeokuta South Constituency II, to advocate for acquiring the land for public use.
In their plea, the traders hope Abiodun will address the situation promptly to avert the negative consequences on the livelihoods of thousands and the potential rise in unemployment in the state.
