The Delta State House of Assembly has issued a heartfelt plea to the Nigerian military to temper justice with mercy over the tragic killings of 16 soldiers in Okuama Community, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The appeal came during Tuesday’s Plenary session, following a motion raised by Hon. Festus Utuama, representing Ughelli South State Constituency.
Utuama passionately condemned the unprovoked attack on the soldiers and a civilian who were on a peacekeeping mission in the community.
Presided over by Speaker Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the session saw lawmakers expressing solidarity with the families of the deceased soldiers and the Nigerian Army.
They urged Governor Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently intervene, directing relevant security agencies to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute the perpetrators of the heinous crime.
Furthermore, the Assembly called upon Governor Oborevwori to establish a Commission of Enquiry to delve into the underlying causes of the conflict between Okuama Community and Okoloba Community in Bomadi Local Government Area.
In an impassioned plea, Utuama emphasized the need to protect the vulnerable members of society who have suffered immensely since the onset of the crisis.
Speaker Guwor directed the motion to be promptly forwarded to Governor Oborevwori for immediate action, while urging the House committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure strict adherence to the resolution.
The resolution was unanimously adopted by the House, with a moment of silence observed in honor of the fallen soldiers.
