Forty-eight members of various cult groups in Sagamu, Ogun State, have renounced their membership, handing over their firearms to law enforcement authorities.
The event, marked by solemnity and hope, unfolded at the Akarigbo Palace, where the repentant cultists made their pledge to forsake violence and embrace a new path towards positive societal contribution.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, emphasized the significance of the occasion, stating, “The olive branch we are extending to these cultists is a product of several engagements.
“We all know the problem we have had in the past with frequent cult clashes causing loss of lives in Sagamu.”
Alamutu underscored the collaborative effort between the government, law enforcement, and traditional rulers in initiating this transformative process.
The weapons relinquished by the repentant cultists included a pump-action gun, double barrels, single barrels, English pistols, locally made pistols, and cartridges, symbolizing a tangible step towards peace and security in the region.
Alamutu reiterated the directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, emphasizing the necessity of mopping up illicit firearms to safeguard communities from further harm.
Addressing the gathering, the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remo land, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, reflected on the journey towards reconciliation, stating,
He said “the amnesty for the cultists was a result of several engagements and discussions during which many of them regretted their nefarious acts and promised to turn a new leaf.”
Oba Ajayi highlighted the community’s determination to confront the scourge of cultism and provide a path to redemption for those willing to embrace change.
Expressing gratitude to all stakeholders involved, including Governor Dapo Abiodun, security agencies, and the Sagamu Security Committee, Oba Ajayi urged residents to extend support and acceptance to the repentant cultists as they reintegrate into society.
He emphasized the importance of unity and compassion in fostering a culture of peace and understanding.
Among the dignitaries present were the Special Adviser to Governor Abiodun on Security, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), and representatives from the Directorate of Security Service.
The event also saw the participation of local traditional leaders, including the Elepe of Epe, Sagamu, and the Odofin of Soyindo, Sagamu, underscoring the collective commitment to lasting peace and reconciliation.
