President Bola Tinubu has issued a resolute call to action, urging judges to categorize kidnappers as terrorists in light of the escalating abduction crisis plaguing Nigeria.
Speaking at a Ramadan dinner with members of the Federal judiciary, Tinubu condemned the reprehensible acts perpetrated by kidnappers and emphasized the need for decisive measures to address the scourge.
During the dinner attended by serving and retired judicial officers, including former Chief Justices of Nigeria, Justice Tinubu reiterated the government’s commitment to defeating banditry and kidnapping.
He characterized kidnappers as cowardly individuals who prey on vulnerable targets, particularly children, and called for their treatment as terrorists to effectively combat their activities.
“We must treat kidnappers as terrorists. They are cowardly. They have been degraded. They look for soft targets.
“They go to schools, kidnap children, and cause disaffection. We must treat them equally as terrorists in order to get rid of them, and I promise you we will get rid of them,” declared President Tinubu, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
In addition to addressing the urgent need to tackle kidnappings, Tinubu pledged to continue implementing reforms to enhance the welfare and working conditions of judicial officers.
Recognizing the challenges faced by the judiciary, including outdated equipment and stagnant salaries, he expressed his commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring fair compensation for all.
“I recognize that the judiciary has one of the most unrewarded responsibilities. They are yet to modernize equipment and recordkeeping, and their progress towards improvement is slow.
“ While the framers of the law may have their reasons, I perceive this differently and see this from a fair compensation angle that should benefit all,” Tinubu affirmed.
Expressing gratitude for the judiciary’s dedicated service, Tinubu commended their role in upholding the integrity of the judicial arm of government.
He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering support for the judiciary and pledged to work collaboratively towards a brighter future for Nigeria.
In response, Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, lauded President Tinubu for his commitment to judicial reforms and improving the welfare of judicial officers.
He expressed appreciation for the President’s leadership and emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to address judicial challenges.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for President Tinubu’s decisive action in addressing the stagnant state of judges’ salaries and emoluments.
He commended the President’s determination and compassion in prioritizing judicial matters and pledged continued support for the judiciary’s advancement.
