The $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery has initiated the sale of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, to oil marketers nationwide.
Confirmed by both dealers and plant officials, the commencement of diesel sales marks a significant stride for the refinery.
Abubakar Maigandi, the National President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, hailed Dangote’s initiative, predicting a substantial drop in diesel prices due to increased supply from the refinery.
This comes as a relief to consumers amidst recent price hikes, with Maigandi reporting a noticeable decline in prices already underway in Lagos.
A senior management official of the firm further affirmed the sale of diesel, hinting at the imminent release of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) into the market.
Despite encountering challenges since its inauguration in May 2023, the Dangote Refinery has persevered, recently announcing the commencement of diesel and aviation fuel production on January 12, 2024.
In expressing gratitude, Aliko Dangote, in a statement, acknowledged the support of key stakeholders including President Bola Tinubu, regulatory bodies, and the Nigerian populace.
With production already underway, Dangote emphasized the refinery’s commitment to delivering quality products to the market pending regulatory approvals.
Situated on the outskirts of Lagos, the Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, promises to transform Nigeria from a fuel importer to a net exporter, reshaping the regional fuel market landscape in the process.
