The Nigerian Army says it has apprehended two of its personnel allegedly involved in the theft of armoured cables at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the suspects, identified as CPL Innocent Joseph and L/CPL Jacob Gani, were caught red-handed attempting to abscond from the refinery premises with 897 armoured cables.
The Dangote Refinery, a cornerstone of Nigeria’s industrial landscape, stands as a testament to the country’s economic aspirations.
Inaugurated on May 22, 2023, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, the refinery boasts the capacity to process a staggering 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil, solidifying its position as the largest single-train refinery globally, with an investment exceeding $19 billion.
Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, expressed deep concern over the soldiers’ alleged involvement in criminal activities, emphasising that such actions do not reflect the ethical standards upheld by the Nigerian Army.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the suspects were currently in custody, pending further investigation.
Preliminary findings indicate that the soldiers were reportedly hired by a civilian contractor, known only as Mr. Smart, who claimed to require assistance in retrieving armoured cables left behind on the refinery’s premises.
However, upon apprehension, the contractor absconded, leaving the soldiers to face the consequences alone.
Efforts are underway to ascertain the full extent of the soldiers’ involvement in the theft, with the stolen cables already recovered and secured.
The Nigerian Army reassures the public that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against the culprits, reaffirming its commitment to upholding discipline, integrity, and accountability within its ranks.
