Over 500 pupils of Kuchichacha LEA Primary School in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja have been found learning under precarious conditions due to dilapidated infrastructure and a severe shortage of teachers.
A report by Tracka, a prominent procurement non-profit organization, highlights the dire situation where classrooms with fallen roofs pose serious safety risks to students.
Despite repeated appeals to authorities, including the council chairman and UBEC, the pleas for renovation and staffing have fallen on deaf ears, forcing parents to withdraw their children from school, exacerbating the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that this alleged neglect did not only deprive the children of Kuchichacha of quality education but also contributes to the broader crisis of 18 million Nigerian children being out of school, as reported by UNICEF.
The community secretary, Mr. Magaji, expressed deep concern over the challenges faced by the children, emphasising the urgent need for intervention to prevent further setbacks in their education.
The reports reads: “This is the condition of Kuchichacha LEA Primary School in Kwali Area Council, FCT. The roofs are blown off, the classrooms are on the verge of collapsing and only 5 teachers are attending to 500 students. Any teacher posted there immediately relocates because of the terrible infrastructure.
“This condition has made parents withdraw their children and return them to the farms. The parents also lamented how all efforts to get the attention of the council chairman and UBEC through their various letters have fallen on deaf ears.
“We call on your office, @NigEducation, @ubecnigeria to facilitate the renovation and staffing of this school to provide the children of Kuchichacha access to quality education.
“This condition has made parents withdraw their child(ren) from school and return them to the farms instead.
