No fewer than 12 residents of Okuama in Delta State have reportedly died of snakebites, hunger, and starvation during their harrowing 45-day ordeal in the forests.
The residents fled their homes shortly after the military invaded their community in retaliation of the killings of 13 of its personnel .
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the residents spent 45 days in the forest where they were hiding from the soldiers brutality .
Narrating their experience in the forest, a community leader (name withheld) said 12 of them have died of snakebites, hunger and starvation .
It was further gathered that despite the recent inauguration of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Management Committee by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, grievances mount over delayed relief efforts amidst the aftermath of a military invasion.
Bearing the brunt of displacement and deprivation, Okuama residents faced dire circumstances following a military incursion into their community, prompting their flight to the forests for safety.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that amidst the absence of relief materials and medical aid, twelve lives have reportedly succumbed to the harsh realities of snake-infested terrain and the relentless grip of hunger.
A community leader stated this,lamenting that the residents were left with no care while they stayed in the bush for 45 days .
However, the lingering specter of destruction and displacement casts a shadow over the prospects of reconciliation and restoration for the beleaguered community.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that Okuama residents await reprieve from their arduous plight, called for swift and decisive action to alleviate their suffering and pave the way for a return to normalcy.
