Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that citizens are bearing the burden of subsidising corruption and inefficiency within the administration.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Atiku lamented what he called unprecedented hardships faced by Nigerian workers under the current administration, asserting that no government in the nation’s history had infringed upon workers’ rights as severely as the present one.
Atiku highlighted the daily struggles of workers amidst skyrocketing prices of essential goods, criticizing the government’s failure to fulfill promises of wage increments and address the dire living conditions of the workforce.
Drawing attention to the confusion surrounding the subsidy regime, particularly in relation to the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Atiku condemned the government’s unilateral decisions without consulting worker representatives.
He emphasised that the continual increase in tariffs across various sectors without tackling underlying corruption and inefficiencies only exacerbates the burden on Nigerian citizens.
Atiku invoked the legacy of past labor leaders in Nigeria’s history, underscoring the enduring resilience of the Nigerian worker in the face of adversity.
Expressing solidarity with workers on International Workers’ Day, Atiku urged the government to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian workers and address the systemic challenges plaguing the nation’s economy.
The former vice president concluded by warning that the government’s approach to economic management seemed to prioritize experimentation over the well-being of its citizens, leaving Nigerian workers marginalized and disempowered.
