The Oyo State branch of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights (CDWR) has thrown its support behind the demands of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM).
The group urged the state government to act swiftly before the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given by the union.
The CDWR emphasized the importance of addressing the grievances raised by the nurses to avert a shutdown of public hospitals across the state.
In a statement signed by its State Coordinator, Abiodun Bamigboye (Abbey Trotsky), the CDWR underscored the urgency of the situation and called upon the state leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to organize solidarity actions to press the Makinde-led government into action.
Expressing solidarity with the NANNM’s demands, the CDWR highlighted the critical issues at stake, including the implementation of the adjusted Consolidated Health Salary Structure, correction of errors on promotion letters, and the recruitment of more nurses and midwives in the state.
The CDWR condemned the need for the union to resort to issuing ultimatums, emphasizing that it reflects poorly on the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
The statement from the CDWR lamented Governor Makinde’s alleged anti-worker stance and criticized his administration for contributing to the shortage of nurses and healthcare workers in the state.
It underscored the importance of concerted and determined struggle to achieve the desired outcomes, stressing the need for mobilization of both union members and the general public to support the nurses’ cause.
Furthermore, the CDWR called on the NANNM leadership to initiate mobilization efforts and prepare for possible strike action if the state government fails to address their demands within the stipulated timeframe.
It urged the union to produce mobilization materials and appeal for public support, emphasizing the importance of a unified front in compelling the government to act.
The CDWR called upon the NLC and TUC to stand in solidarity with the nurses and midwives, urging them to organize statewide actions to bolster the nurses’ demands.
The statement emphasized the non-negotiable nature of the nurses’ demands and underscored the need for collective action to achieve meaningful change in the healthcare sector of Oyo State.
