The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of HRM Ogwong A Abang, the paramount ruler of Mbo Local Government Area.
The traditional ruler was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen on Saturday night in his palace at Ebughu.
ASP Timfon John, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on Sunday.
Speaking on the development, John assured the public that efforts are underway to secure the monarch’s release.
“We received the information yesterday (Saturday) and the police are working round the clock already to ensure that the monarch regains freedom,” he stated.
The abduction reportedly took place around 9 PM, adding to the growing concerns over security in the region.
The local community has expressed alarm over the increasing criminal activities and what they perceive as a deteriorating security situation.
This incident comes amid an ongoing crisis involving the medical community in Akwa Ibom State.
Doctors have withdrawn their services in solidarity with Dr. John Robbin Esu, a colleague who was abducted in Oron over 15 days ago and remains in captivity.
The dual kidnappings of the monarch and the doctor have heightened fears and frustrations among residents and professionals in the state.
Community leaders and residents are calling for immediate action to address the security lapses.
The recent abductions underscore the urgent need for improved security measures to protect vulnerable individuals and restore a sense of safety in the region.
