The President of the Synod and Bishop of Yewa, Rt. Rev. Ayo Adeniyi, has called on the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to prioritize the enhancement of infrastructure, social amenities, health services, food security, and the overall safety of the state.
This appeal was made during the second Synod of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Yewa, which concluded its annual session on Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the Methodist Church Nigeria in Igbogila, Yewa-North, Ogun State.
In his address, Bishop Adeniyi highlighted the dire state of roads in Yewa land, urging immediate government intervention to improve the region’s infrastructure.
He emphasized that the poor condition of the roads hampers economic activities and the overall well-being of residents.
The Synod also tackled the current hardship in Nigeria, attributing severe difficulties faced by citizens to inflation, currency devaluation, and widespread insecurity.
It called on Nigerians to support one another, make personal sacrifices, engage in collective actions, and offer joint prayers to mitigate these challenges.
The Synod specifically urged the Government’s Economic Team, the Ministry of Finance, and the Central Bank of Nigeria to implement measures to strengthen the Naira.
Recognizing the high levels of insecurity, including in the South Western region, the Synod called on traditional rulers and community leaders to act with integrity and honesty.
It supported the introduction of state police to protect citizens from herdsmen and other threats, emphasizing the need for localized security measures.
The Synod also underscored the importance of agriculture for food security and industrial value chains. It called for the involvement of government agencies, the private sector, religious bodies, and all Nigerians in combating hunger and poverty.
The Synod saw the participation of Lay President Hon. Sir Sunday Kojeku KJW and delegates from various circuits including Gbogidi Ilaro, Igbogila, Ayetoro, and others.
It commenced with a Holy Communion service on Thursday, setting a spiritual tone for the event. Sessions were divided into Ministerial and Lay segments, presided over by the Bishop and Lay President respectively.
The official opening of the Synod took place on Friday, May 17, with Evangelist Ajibola Ogunkeyede, a pilgrimage travel agency consultant, serving as Chairman. Notable dignitaries present included the Methodist Archbishop of RIYE Diocese, Most Rev. Adegbemi Atanda Adewale; Archbishop of Lagos Mainland, Most Rev. Obafemi Adeleye; Retired Archbishop of Igbobini, Most Rev. Charles Obafemi Oderinde; and several other bishops.
The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Isiaq Salako, was represented by his Special Assistant, Chief Rotimi Oderinde.
Key resolutions and observations from the Synod included a strong emphasis on the theme “Arise and Build,” urging all Nigerians to take proactive steps to rebuild society and address the nation’s challenges.
The Synod commended the leadership of His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba JP for his initiatives, including the establishment of a board of directors for all Conference Institutions, the operationalization of the MCN Printing Press at Marina, and the registration of Methodist TV and Radio stations.
In conclusion, the Synod issued a firm call for unity and action among Nigerians to rebuild the nation.
The collaborative efforts of the Methodist Church and its leaders were highlighted as crucial to addressing the country’s challenges.
The event wrapped up with a renewed commitment to collective action and national rebuilding.
