Seven individuals were found dead inside a music studio in Bayelsa State on Tuesday after inhaling what is suspected to be generator fumes.
The studio, located along Transformer Road in the Amarata area of Yenagoa, the state capital, was operated by one of the deceased, identified as Akpos Barakubo.
The victims were believed to have been working late into the night on Monday.
Exhausted, they apparently fell asleep without turning off the generator, which led to the fatal accumulation of fumes.
The lifeless bodies of six individuals were discovered in the morning, while a seventh person, initially found unconscious, was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed.
It was revealed that many of the deceased were undergraduate students of the Niger Delta University who had a passion for music and were actively involved in the studio’s activities.
Local security operatives have since cordoned off the area, and the corpses have been transported to the mortuary for further examination.
Damion Asamonye, a resident of the area, expressed his anger and frustration, blaming the federal and state governments as well as the Port Harcourt Power Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) for the deaths.
He highlighted the inadequate power supply as a key factor that led to the reliance on the generator.
Asamonye criticized the electricity distribution company for its inconsistent power supply practices.
“Both the federal and state governments have failed us; if there was a public power supply, maybe these people wouldn’t have lost their lives in this circumstance.
Seven able-bodied young men just died like that because of the failure of government,” he lamented.
He further criticized the PHED, accusing them of only providing power briefly during billing periods and then cutting it off soon after payments were made.
Another resident, Joy Reuben, echoed similar sentiments, calling the situation a wake-up call for the government to ensure reliable electricity.
She emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided with a consistent power supply and urged authorities to take immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future.
The tragic event has cast a shadow over the community, bringing to light the critical issues surrounding power supply in Nigeria and the dire consequences that can arise from the lack of reliable infrastructure.
