In response to recent misconceptions circulating on social media platforms, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has clarified its stance regarding the accessibility of student loans.

The management of NELFUND categorically refuted claims suggesting that the student loan programme is exclusively reserved for federal institutions, emphasizing its inclusion of state institutions.

In a statement titled “Clarification: State Institutions Included in Student Loan Programme,” released on Tuesday, NELFUND debunked the misinformation and provided insight into the program’s structure.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Akintinde Sawyerr, reiterated during a Pre-Application Sensitisation Press Conference in Abuja that the initiative encompasses both federal and state tertiary institutions.

Sawyerr highlighted the streamlined application process aimed at facilitating easy access for eligible students enrolled in federal institutions.

He disclosed plans for a phased rollout, with the initial phase focusing on students attending federal schools, followed by subsequent phases extending the programme to state institutions.

Nasir Ayitogo, the Media and Public Relations Lead for NELFUND, reiterated the Fund’s commitment to inclusivity, stating, “State institutions are unequivocally included in our student loan programme by law.”

He emphasized the phased approach as a strategic measure for effective management and equitable distribution of resources.

Furthermore, the statement underscored NELFUND’s alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the mission to ensure equitable access to educational resources for all students, regardless of their choice of institution.

The announcement comes amidst growing concerns about access to higher education financing, with NELFUND’s clarification serving to reassure students across the nation of the programme’s inclusivity and commitment to supporting educational aspirations.
