The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), a leading environmental NGO dedicated to nature conservation and biodiversity resources management, is gearing up to host its 22nd annual flagship policy and advocacy lecture.
The event, known as the Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 28th May 2024.
With the theme “Carbon Credits: Opportunities and Pitfalls,” this year’s lecture aims to delve into the complexities surrounding carbon credits and their role in combating climate change.
Mr. Kevin Juma, Africa Climate Director at The Nature Conservancy in Nairobi, Kenya, has been enlisted as the distinguished speaker for the occasion.
The Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture is an annual event organized by the NCF in collaboration with the Family of Late Chief S.L. Edu, the founder of NCF, with support from Chevron Nigeria Limited.
Over the past two decades, this lecture series has provided a platform for renowned speakers to address pressing environmental issues and propose solutions.
The event is scheduled to take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help – The Hall, located at 16 Musa Yar’Adua Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, commencing at 11:00 am.
The Special Guest of Honour for the occasion is expected to be the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance will be members of the diplomatic corps, traditional rulers, policymakers, academia, researchers, government representatives, environmental and sustainability stakeholders, students, and both local and international press.
Dr. Joseph Onoja, the Director-General of NCF, emphasized the significance of addressing climate change, stating, “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time.
Rising temperatures and changing weather patterns are putting our planet’s biodiversity at risk, which in turn threatens the vital ecosystem services that we rely on for survival.
But there’s hope! The lecture will open our eyes to how to handle the situation smoothly.”
In addition to the keynote address, the Memorial Lecture will feature the awarding of grants to two Ph.D. grantees.
These grants, worth millions of naira, are being sponsored by Chevron Nigeria Limited, further demonstrating the commitment of corporate entities to environmental conservation and sustainability initiatives.
The Memorial Lecture will be a free hybrid event, providing both physical and virtual attendance options to accommodate a wider audience.
