The Commissioner for Social Development,Afolashade Opeyemi has i expressed deep concern over the discovery of dangerous weapons, including guns, daggers, and charms among the beggars in the state.
Opeyemi reported a crackdown on suspected arm depots among beggars in Ilorin, resulting in the removal of 158 individuals believed to be involved in criminal activities.
She said this during a briefing held in Ilorin
She said “This discovery raises serious questions about their purported status as beggars.”
Opeyemi highlighted that many of these beggars originate from Bauchi, Kano, and other northern states, posing a significant social threat, particularly in urban areas like Ilorin.
Despite government efforts to engage with these marginalized groups, she lamented their persistent non-compliance and stubbornness as ongoing challenges.
Opeyemi noted the successful rehabilitation and discharge of five mentally challenged individuals in Ilorin.
He said after receiving treatment and being certified as mentally stable, these individuals were repatriated to their respective states.
The Commissioner for Works and Transport, AbdulQwawiy Olododo, highlighted the state’s commendable efforts in firefighting and infrastructure development throughout 2023.
He reported that Kwara State experienced multiple fire incidents, leading to the tragic loss of at least 10 lives.
However, he praised the swift response of the State Fire Service, which received 190 emergency calls and successfully preserved property valued at over N18 billion.
“The estimated value of property lost during this period amounted to N629 million,” Olododo said.
He attributed the effective firefighting to the acquisition of modern equipment and gear by the state government, which played a crucial role in saving numerous lives.
In terms of infrastructure, Olododo revealed that the state completed 75 road projects, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, and interlocking works, enhancing travel efficiency.
He said there are ongoing efforts on 80 more road projects across the state’s 16 local government areas, aimed at further improving the infrastructure.
