CJN  Summons Judges Over Conflicting Orders On Kano Emirate Tussle

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has summoned the Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court over the issuance of conflicting interim injunctions regarding the leadership of the Kano Emirate.

This rare intervention by the CJN aims to address the legal discord that has intensified uncertainties surrounding the emirate’s governance and ceremonial functions.

The conflicting court orders have further complicated the situation in the Kano Emirate, a region historically rich in cultural heritage and political significance.

The legal tussle centers around the leadership of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and his successor, Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir of Kano.

Recently, the Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S. A. Amobeda, issued an order reinforcing the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace.

This order explicitly supports the authority of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, affirming his rights to the emirate’s throne and ensuring his uninterrupted enjoyment of all associated rights and privileges.

Justice Amobeda’s ruling was intended to cement Emir Aminu Bayero’s position and prevent any actions that could undermine his authority.

This includes safeguarding against any interference that might challenge his legitimacy or the peaceful execution of his duties.

In contrast, the Kano State High Court, under the jurisdiction of Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, issued a protective injunction favoring Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

This order seeks to shield Sanusi and his associates from potential harassment by state authorities and affirms their autonomy.

It specifically prohibits any actions that might interfere with Sanusi’s authority or seize symbolic regalia such as the twin spear, the Royal Hat of Dabo, and the Ostrich-feathered shoes, which hold significant cultural and historical value to the Kano Emirate.

The CJN’s decision to summon the Chief Judges aims to harmonise these conflicting orders and restore clarity to the emirate’s leadership.

According to Channels TV, this unprecedented move underscores the judiciary’s commitment to resolving internal conflicts that affect governance and public order.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that the  legal struggle over the Kano Emirate is not just a battle for the throne but also a reflection of deeper political and social dynamics within the region.
