The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Ogun State Council, has expressed profound gratitude to the Governor of Ogun State,  Dr. Dapo Abiodun, for his recent approval of N2 billion for the payment of gratuities to state and local government pensioners.

This significant financial commitment aims to alleviate the backlog of unpaid gratuities, providing much-needed relief to the senior citizens of Ogun State.

In an official letter addressed to the Governor, the Chairman of the Union, Comrade (Chief) W.O. Oloyede, along with the Executive Council, conveyed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of all members.

The union acknowledged the governor’s consistent support and compassion towards pensioners, highlighting that this gesture reaffirms his commitment to their welfare during his second term in office.

“This remarkable lofty gesture has truly confirmed the sincerity of the humane nature of our amiable and friendly Executive Governor to the cause of we, the Senior Citizens,” the letter stated, emphasizing the positive impact of the governor’s actions on the lives of retirees.

Beyond the recent gratuity payment, the union praised Governor Abiodun for the regular and prompt payment of monthly pensions, which has ensured financial stability for pensioners.

Additionally, the extension of the N10,000 fuel subsidy palliatives for nine months, which ended in March 2024, was particularly noted as a significant support measure during challenging economic times.

The union also expressed gratitude for the inclusion of pensioners in the government-subsidized rice-sale outlet, which has been beneficial in mitigating the cost of living.

These initiatives, according to the union, underscore Governor Abiodun’s status as a “reliable Pensioner-friendly Governor, a father and comforter.”

However, the union did not hesitate to bring further concerns to the governor’s attention.

They passionately appealed for the release of the much-anticipated Consequential Increase in Pensions.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that this  adjustment is critical, especially before the impending new wage increase, to ensure that the most vulnerable and elderly pensioners can afford essential needs, including medication.

The union pledged unwavering support for Governor Abiodun’s administration, expressing optimism that their appeals would be addressed favourably.

They wished the governor continued wisdom, health, and success in steering the state’s affairs.

The union also took the opportunity to  congratulate Governor Abiodun on his birthday, celebrated on May 29, and marked the first anniversary of his second term in office.
