The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission has initiated an investigation into an alleged scam within the recently launched street hawkers empowerment scheme by the Kano State Government.
The scheme, designed to provide financial support to street hawkers, has been tainted by allegations of fraud, prompting a discreet probe by the commission.
The scheme, inaugurated last Wednesday, aimed to empower 465 street hawkers with a grant of N50,000 each.
However, viral videos surfaced showing a group of youths who were not part of the official beneficiary list allegedly impersonating the legitimate recipients.
According to reports, these impersonators managed to collect the N50,000 grants, but were then coerced by an intermediary who took N45,000 from each, leaving them with only N5,000.
Barrister Muhuyi Magaji Rimingado, the Chairman of the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, confirmed that the commission has begun investigating the allegations.
Rimingado emphasized the commission’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and safeguarding the integrity of the empowerment schemes.
“We have actually begun investigation into the empowerment scheme and others to ensure that the culprits are brought to book,”
Rimingado stated. “I can assure you that no matter who is involved, they will be brought to justice as no stone will be left unturned.”
Rimingado highlighted that the alleged scam violates sections 21, 22, and 23 of the law establishing the commission.
He reassured the public that the agency’s activities are not aimed at witch-hunting but at ensuring accountability and transparency in government schemes.
He cited ongoing investigations into activities from both the past and present administrations, including the case of the suspended managing director of Abubakar Rimi Television, who is currently facing court proceedings over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Rimingado called on the public to provide any information that could aid in the investigation of anti-graft issues, assuring them of confidentiality and the commission’s dedication to addressing corruption comprehensively.
