The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has officially notified the Head of Service of the Federation, Folasade Yemi-Esan, about persistent allegations of sexual harassment against the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Ibrahim Lamuwa.
In a letter dated May 27, 2024, Tuggar highlighted the serious nature of the accusations and underscored the urgency of addressing the matter thoroughly.
The allegations were brought to his attention by a married female employee of the ministry, Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi. Ajayi, through her lawyer, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), detailed instances of alleged sexual advances made by Lamuwa.
The letter from Minister Tuggar, titled “Re: Official Complaint Regarding Sexual Harassment Of Mrs Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi By Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa (Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Foreign Affairs),” stresses the gravity of the situation.
“I am compelled to write to inform you of a formal complaint against the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa, on allegations of sexual harassment.
Bearing in mind the gravity of the matter, I feel it necessary to draw your attention to it and ask that you handle it accordingly,” the letter read.
The minister expressed his concern over the allegations and emphasized the importance of a prompt and thorough investigation to maintain the integrity of the ministry.
Tuggar also assured the Head of Service of his full cooperation in the investigation, including attaching the email complaint received from Ajayi’s lawyer to his letter.
This development follows increasing scrutiny over workplace conduct within government ministries, highlighting the need for robust mechanisms to handle such serious complaints.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under Tuggar’s leadership, appears committed to ensuring that allegations of this nature are addressed with the utmost seriousness and diligence.
