A tragic incident has occurred at the 14 Brigade Headquarters at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barrack in Ohafia, Abia State.
A soldier identified as Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Vitalis, serving under the brigade and attached to the 144 Battalion’s Forward Operation Base (FOB) at Ngwa High School in Abayi, Osisioma Local Government Area, reportedly committed suicide.
CSM Vitalis, a senior non-commissioned officer from Okpuala in Ngor-Okpuala, Imo State, reportedly shot himself in front of the FOB gate.
The motive behind his decision remains unclear as no suicide note was found at the scene.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the unexpected suicide has prompted a discreet investigation by military authorities to uncover the reasons behind CSM Vitalis’s drastic action.
PLATFORM TIMES further gathered that there were no prior incidents of domestic violence or work-related disciplinary actions against him, either at the Battalion or at the 14 Brigade Headquarters.
Before his death, CSM Vitalis had been missing for the past two weeks.
Efforts by his colleagues and military authorities to contact him during this period were unsuccessful.
His sudden reappearance at the army camp and subsequent suicide shocked his fellow soldiers, who are now grappling with the loss.
Adding to the perplexity, CSM Vitalis was reportedly due to retire from service in October.
This imminent retirement has left his colleagues questioning what might have driven him to take such a drastic step just months before leaving the military.
