The Ogun State community has been enveloped in mourning following the passing of His Royal Highness, Oba (Dr.) Olufemi Okesooto Iyanda Adewunmi Ogunleye, the Towulade of Akinale, who joined his ancestors on June 19, 2024, at the age of 79.

The news has sparked a wave of tributes and condolences from prominent figures, including former Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).

Senator Amosun expressed deep sorrow over the loss, commending Oba Ogunleye’s significant contributions to the development of Akinale, Owu Kingdom, Egbaland, and Ogun State.

Describing the late monarch as a respected and passionate leader, Amosun highlighted his remarkable career as a veteran journalist, public relations icon, and legal practitioner.

These accomplishments, Amosun noted, were a testament to Oba Ogunleye’s effective and successful reign.

“As the first Towulade of Akinale, crowned in 2006, Oba Ogunleye was instrumental in bringing about numerous positive changes in the community,” Amosun said.

“He epitomized purposeful leadership and consistently promoted peaceful coexistence and unity among his people.”

Amosun extended his condolences to Oba Ogunleye’s widow, Olori Olanike Ogunleye, their children, and grandchildren, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.

He also reached out to the Olowu of Owu kingdom, Oba  Prof.Saka Matemilola, the Balogun of Owu kingdom, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and the entire Owu community, acknowledging the significant loss of an illustrious son of the kingdom.

In a heartfelt letter from the Ogun State Chapter of the NIPR, Chairman Oluwaseun Boye and Secretary, Kunle Olayeni expressed their deepest sympathies to the Ogunleye family.

They lauded Oba Ogunleye as an iconic figure in public relations, recalling his rise to prominence as the Public Relations Manager of Nigeria Airways and his status as a Fellow of the NIPR.

“Oba Olufemi Ogunleye was a charismatic leader who served his people with unwavering commitment, dignity, and exemplary leadership,” the NIPR statement read.

“He was a strong pillar of support for Ogun NIPR, demonstrating unparalleled enthusiasm and investing his time and resources to positively project public relations practice.”

The NIPR highlighted Oba Ogunleye’s active involvement in recent events, including the Nigerian Public Relations Week in Abeokuta and the NIPR Diamond Anniversary Walk, noting his dedication despite his health challenges.

The NIPR described the  sudden demise  as a significant loss, especially as the Chapter had been looking forward to celebrating his 80th birthday.

“We take solace in the fact that the late Oba Olufemi Ogunleye lived a fulfilled and impactful life, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for years to come,” the statement continued.

“His contributions to our profession will never be forgotten; he will be sorely missed not only by his subjects but also by the generality of Nigerians.

“A condolence register has been opened at the NIPR Secretariat for members and friends to pay their respects and offer their condolences.”

The Ogun NIPR assured the Ogunleye family of their thoughts and prayers, seeking divine comfort and strength for them during this period of mourning.
