Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has attributed his reasons for choosing not to contest his removal by the previous Kano State government under Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in court deep-seated convictions and pragmatic considerations.
The former Central Bank Governor turned traditional ruler in an exclusive interview by The Sun,but, extracted by PLATFORM TIMES asserted his belief in destiny and divine will.
He stated , “I don’t have a fundamental right to be an Emir. I am one of hundreds of princes. God chose me. And if God says I should leave, I accept it.”
He pointed out the lack of a fair process in his removal, emphasising that he was never formally accused of wrongdoing that would warrant legal defense.
“If they had accused me of fraud or something harming my integrity, I would have gone to court to clear my name,” he added.
Regarding the prospect of legal redress, Sanusi expressed scepticism about the practical outcomes, drawing parallels with historical precedents where similar disputes stretched on for decades without definitive resolution.
He referenced the case of the Emir of Gwandu, removed two decades ago under President Obasanjo, whose legal battles remain unresolved at the Supreme Court.
Sanusi questioned, “Do I have 20 years to fight in court to come back to a throne?”
Furthermore, the renowned scholar and philanthropist reflected on the potential futility of his return amid a contentious political environment.
“Would I have been happy as an Emir in the last three years working with that government?” he pondered, highlighting his preference for a peaceful life in Lagos, away from constant political strife.
Transitioning to the current challenges since his reinstatement, Emir Sanusi addressed the division caused by the creation of new Emirates under the previous administration.
He lamented the fragmentation imposed on Kano’s traditional structure, which he viewed as a calculated effort to weaken the historical fabric of the Emirate.
He criticized the arbitrary nature of the decisions, which he argued lacked consultation with affected communities and undermined centuries-old traditions.
Sanusi stressed the cultural significance and historical continuity of the Kano Emirate, tracing its roots back over a millennium.
He criticized recent legislative measures that sought to legitimise the creation of new Emirates, asserting that such actions lacked constitutional grounding and disregarded the Emirate’s pre-existing governance framework.
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II emphasized that his current role is not merely personal but a custodianship of Kano’s heritage and unity.
He expressed gratitude to the present administration for restoring the traditional order and pledged to uphold the Emirate’s legacy despite uncertainties about his own tenure.
“It’s about the system, not about me or any individual,” he affirmed, signaling his commitment to safeguarding Kano’s cultural integrity for future generations.
