Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, revealed on Wednesday that the failed bombing incident in Port Harcourt was intended to target the Presidential Hotel.
This revelation was made during a visit by the Senate Committee on Privatization, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, to the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The governor explained that the bomber aimed to attack the hotel, which was hosting high-profile individuals, including members of the Senate committee.
The goal was to create a justification for imposing a state of emergency in Rivers State.
“The idea was to prompt a state of emergency by causing chaos while distinguished colleagues were present in Rivers State.
“This would then be used to argue for emergency measures,” Governor Fubara stated.
Governor Fubara stressed that the attack was thwarted, attributing their safety to divine protection.
“When you are with God, even those planning evil against you will fail because God is with you,” he added.
The governor expressed frustration over the perceived silence of the law in addressing such offenses, questioning why certain individuals seem to be above the law.
He noted that tenure elongation for former local government chairmen has never been an issue elsewhere in Nigeria.
“Is it that the Constitution governing Nigeria is different for Rivers State? Why does it seem like the law is always silent when it comes to us?” he asked.
Governor Fubara clarified that his actions were not a personal fight but a defense of the state and its interests against those who exploit others.
He stressed his commitment to delivering good governance and democratic dividends to the people of Rivers State despite facing numerous insults and attacks.
“I have taken those insults in stride because their plan is to distract me. But I remain focused on serving the people of Rivers State,” he said.
He also urged the Senate Committee to consider Rivers State’s interests in their recommendations for the privatization and commercialization of public companies.
He highlighted the importance of the state having stakes in these companies to ensure their viability and protection.
“We are interested in any privatization involving our state. Owning these assets ensures they remain viable for both the state and Nigeria,” Governor Fubara explained.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatization and Commercialization, praised Governor Fubara for his commitment to peace and quality governance.
He urged the governor to continue fostering peace and to abide by the Constitution and judicial interpretations.
“Leadership is a big burden. It’s essential to maintain peace and follow the rules of the land,” Senator Kalu remarked.
The committee pledged to work with the state government to achieve mutually beneficial goals for all Nigerians.
Earlier reports indicated that one person was killed in the explosion on Aba Road in Port Harcourt.
The incident, which occurred around 9 a.m. on Tuesday, is believed to have been inadvertently triggered by the individual involved.
